Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Videogame and Movie Release

EA will be timing the shipping of the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince videogame to coincide with the movie’s new summer 2009 release date. The movie’s original release date has been pushed from November 21 of this holiday season.

Like the other Harry Potter games, Half-Blood Prince videogame is based on the movie not the book. As both an expansion of the story and a reduction of events down to the more action oriented bits, it should give yet another perspective on the story of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Here’s a description of gameplay features from EA’s website.

In the game of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, players will return to Hogwarts to help Harry survive a fraught sixth year. They will also have a chance to engage in exciting wizard duels, mix and brew magical ingredients in Potions class and take to the air to lead the Gryffindor Quidditch team to victory. Players may even get sidetracked by Ron’s romantic entanglements as they journey towards a dramatic climax and discover the identity of the Half-Blood Prince.

Books are necessarily cerebral in nature where much occurs in thoughts and through observation. Movies are more action driven as they really can’t convey thoughts as effectively as the books they’re based on. In most videogames even more story elements are stripped away leaving the skeleton of action not words. It’s very unlikely that the Half-Blood Prince videogame will resemble the book more than casually.

That doesn’t mean that the game won’t be worth playing. There are a lot of people out there that would happily spend hours playing an action packed adventure rather than slog through a 650 page book.
